home : easy DIY frames

Love begins at home, and it is not how much we do... but how much love we put in that action.
- Mother Teresa

We have 2 large frames in our house...both cost less than $10 to make.

One is in the living room...

...and the other is in our bedroom.

Step 1 : go to Home Depot and get the moulding of your choice. (The one we used in our living room is thicker and has a little embellishment on it)
Step 2 : paint / spray paint the moulding
Step 3 : measure the length & width of your frame and cut away.
Step 4 : hammer it in your wall!

I can't really say that this is an easy process, since I just *supervised* the making of it. Jimmy figured everything out and ta-da! it was done. Let me know if you want specific information/measurement, and I'll ask him =)

my sweet mufin

I have no clue how I got to this website, but I’m sure it started off with one of the 10 million blogs I read every day. A click here and a click there…then boom! I found my sweet muffin.

I literally went through the whole catalog and they have THE CUTEST stuff for kids.

Like this decal

And this…

...and this one

I want the whole store. The furlough days next month are not going to help. Darn.

summer 2012

Memorial Day weekend means summer is just around the corner! This summer will be shorter than usual for us since LAUSD decided to change the school year. I want to make the most of it, so I decided to make a fun summer list, inspired by this post

*camping, family photo, beach trip, make ice cream, play with bubbles, host a water day, have a picnic, go to Legoland, plan playdates, go fly a kite, go to the train museum, and go the Aquarium*

16 more days of school!

photo tip : bribe, or not to bribe

In the past 5 years, I have heard the craziest bribes from parents to get their kids to smile.

“Do you want this (gigantic) lollipop? Smile, and you can have the whole thing!”
“Mc Donald’s is going to close in 5 minutes...hurry (the hell) up and smile!”
“Do you want to go to Japan with me and Daddy or do you want to stay home?”
“Smile and daddy will take you to the movies…you can get the biggest popcorn and TWO candies!” (talking to a 1-year old)
“One more smile and we’ll make our backyard into a basketball court!”

Crazy, right? Some made me laugh inside and some made me cringe. Oh, what parents would do!

When I quit taking photos professionally, I stopped taking pictures of Blee. If you look at my photos, I only have about 10 images for January, February, and March of 2012. LAME. That is when I decided to start this blog. It forces me to take pictures and try new angles to make them interesting. At first, it was pretty easy. I would wait for Blee to be in a good mood, find the perfect lighting, and then shoot away. But since I started this blog, Blee’s a little…mmm…annoyed by me and my camera.

To Bribe, or Not to Bribe? That is the question.

My answer? Go for it if your subject is UNDER 2 years old. If he/she is older than 2, you will most likely get the totally awkward, totally fake, hurry-up-and-give-me-my-toy smile.

From my experience, talking to kids and engaging them have worked.

For younger kids (2-6yrs)
*Have them jump, or twirl around. This usually will get me a natural smile*

*Have them pretend like an animal*

*Sing a song with hand motions*
Itsy Bitsy Spider, Hokey Pokey, If You’re Happy and You Know It, Wheels on the Bus

*Say, “I’m going to tickle you!”*

*Have them run towards you/someone else*

*Use a prop that you’re ok with if it’s in the photo (bubbles, books, etc)*

For older kids (6+ yrs)

*Talk about their teachers, schools, favorite sport*
*Have them tell you something funny that mommy/daddy/sister/ uncle/etc did*
*Have them imagine something silly (daddy drinking from a bottle, mommy playing in the mud)*

*Have the KID tickle somebody. Then, have that “somebody” run away so that you can get the shot. You can also use stuffed animals and have them tickle it*
*Boys like talking about farts and poop. I’m all for it if it gets me a smile*

It's true when they say it's difficult to photograph your own kid. I look like a total fool jumping up and down screaming crazy things. Oh, the things you do for that ONE good image!

So instead of photos like this...

...or like this...

You can get these...

Happy shooting!

it's friday

It's Friday, Friday
Gotta get down on Friday
Everybody's lookin' forward to the weekend, weekend
Friday, Friday
Gettin' down on Friday
Everybody's lookin' forward to the weekend
Partyin', partyin' (Yeah
Partyin', partyin' (Yeah)
Fun, fun, fun, fun
Lookin' forward to the weekend

Friday nights used to be movies, dinners, bars, designated drivers, and 2am bacon-wrapped hot dogs.

Now, it's dinner at home, a walk to the park, slides, swings, watch the big kids play basketball, and pjs by 9pm.

...and you know what? I wouldn't trade it for the world.

I love my little family.

*Btw, my husband LOVES Rebecca Black. He tries to hide it, but when he started to look up the chords for Friday, you know it's fo' real*

father's day gift

Jimmy did a great job with Mother’s Day, so now it’s my turn. I thought about buying a bunch of useless crap interesting stuff he likes from, but I wanted to make it a little more personal. I poured through blogs and pinterest for ideas, but in the end, I’m going to go with what I know best : Photoshop and templates.

My first attempt was to make a comic book with images of Jimmy and my son. Something like this:

But then, I realized that I’m not very good with words. I also didn’t want to put words into my son’s mouth. I like the idea of making a comic book, but I’m going to put it off until Blee’s a little older. Then, he can tell me exactly what he wants for the speech bubbles.

So then, I was back to square one. I searched through my laptop for Photoshop templates and decided to make an ABC book using pictures of Blee and Jimmy. This way, Blee can have fun learning (hopefully) the alphabet and Jimmy can help him out! It’s a win-win situation!

Here are some of the pages…

What do you think? I’m a little jealous that Jimmy has so many fun photos with Blee. I know it’s partly my fault, since I literally RUN from the camera, but now I wish I took more with him…especially when he was little. It’s crazy how fast he’s growing up, and I want Blee to be able to look back and see photos of us together.

Oh, and don’t worry, I told Jimmy he can’t look at this blog post.

Hope you have a nice weekend!

fi chuck!

Last Saturday, the good 'ole Torrance Fire Department had their Open House. I don't remember when the last time I went to a Fire House...maybe in elementary school? I saw their sign when I drove by on my way to the gym and decided to take Blee as soon as he woke up from his nap.

It took awhile for him to warm up, but when he did, he enjoyed sitting in the driver's seat.

He also liked exploring the inside of the truck.

We were only there for about 30 minutes. Right before we left, Blee looked up at the fireman's pole (is that what it's called?) and was totally mesmerized.

I'm so glad Blee got to see and explore a real "fi chuck"! He probably won't remember a thing, but I had fun watching his eyes grow huge and stare at everything in awe. Thanks, city of Torrance!

Go Lakers!

Yea right. I didn't even know it was basketball season until my bff told me. All I cared about was the Desparate Housewives SERIES finale.

Funny, though, because I found these in Blee's closet yesterday. I for sure did not purchase them. Don't know where they came from.

What I DO know is that the boy sure loves basketball. He likes going to the park around the corner of our house and, stare at the big boys playing ball. Everytime they score, he puts his hands up and screams, "yay!"

Hmmmm...maybe Blee will enjoy playing basketball. Or be part of the cheering squad. I'm fine either way.

Happy Tuesday!
