Cardboard Box City 2012

This past weekend, my church hosted Cardboard Box City 2012. Cardboard Box City is a fundraiser for Family Promise, "an non-profit, interfaith hospitality network working toward providing transitional assistance for families with children experiencing homelessness".

Participants created their cardboard box "homes" and slept overnight on the church lawn.

Here's a glimpse of the event.

First up, Jimmy's cardboard box home.

Participants got very creative!

We even had a cardboard box "mini" church.

Blee had an awesome time hanging out with his church family.

Left : Our MC...actor Larry Campbell.
Right : Our faithful pastor.

My November Guest. One of the many performers of the night.

Blee and J dancing to the band.

This event raised over $5000 for Family Promise. I am so blessed to be a member of this church and I hope that we continue to grow together with the community.

DIY : chalk vases

Super easy DIY chalk vases! All you need is an empty jar, tape, chalkboard spray paint, and chalk.

Step 1 : Gather up some jars (we save jars from BBQ sauces, pickles, jam, etc). Peel the labels with warm soapy water. If it's too sticky, you can use Goo Gone

Step 2 : Using tape, mask off the place you want to spray. You can cover up the rest of the jar with old newspaper.

Step 3 : Spray your heart out.

Step 4 : Let it dry and peel off the tape and the newspaper.

Step 5 : Write cute messages / draw pictures using chalk. *Chalk markers would probably work better and will be less messy*

Step 6 : Add fresh cut flowers or add soil and potted flowers.

I made these for a friend's baby shower. Each vase had a different message for the baby : "grow wise", "grow honest", "grow with God", "grow healthy", and "grow sweet".

I've yet to meet the baby girl...I can't wait!

insta Friday

My week in very random instagram photos...

1. Super busy, super fun week! This week, our church hosted Vacation Bible School, so we were basically there everyday helping out and hanging out with the kiddies.

2. Vacation Bible School skit by our very talented members.

3. Jimmy was our game leader...and the ukulele player =)

4. Finger sucking is a full time job. Blee's pediatrician told us to dip his fingers in vinegar to get him to stop. Tried it. The kid asked for more vinegar. Oops.

5. One of the best purchases this summer. Hours of fun (although we worry when he actually has to work and blow using a bubble wand. We might be causing him to be bubble-lazy)

6. I spy a little melon in our garden.

7. The tomatoes are still going strong.

8. Blee insisted on wearing his boots in the kiddie pool. He quickly got out and walked around the yard with water in his boots. Silly kid.

9. Weekly swim lessons...

10. One of our favorite meals...curry!

11. Trying to quiet down a toddler during church is no joke.

12. First time playing foosball. I think he had a good time.

13. Jimmy setting up the screen for movie-on-the-lawn at church. Super fun annual VBS tradition!

14. Blee hanging out with the cutest little girls.

15. Weekly Thursday night dinner with great grandma.

That's it for now! Have a great week!

my fav : piggy paint

I don't remember how I first came across Piggy Paint (more than likely while reading a blog) but when I did, I was more than excited. It was like Christmas in July, the solution to the problem of the century. Jimmy always complains about the smell of nail polish, so as soon as I found out that these were NON-TOXIC and ODORLESS, I signed onto Amazon and ordered me a gift set. SCORE!!

Now I don't have to sit on the bench outside in the cold while doing my nails. YAY! Piggy paint is also great for kids and pregnant mamas. It's water based, and is it’s free of formaldehyde, toluene, phthalates, Bisphenol A, ethyl acetate and acetone. They also just came out with a base coat and a topcoat, so you can do the whole deal without worrying.

Piggy Paint in Forever Fancy

I'm excited to start my Piggy paint collection. I feel like quoting Pokemon..."gotta catch 'em all"!

our life with diapered stuffed animals

Blee : "Mommy, kirin (giraffe) poo-poo. Diaper peas"
Me : "Uh huh..."
Blee : "Mommy, kuma (bear) poo-poo. Kusai!! (stinks) Diaper peas" pointing at the wet wipes

Apparently, we all need diapers around here.

Pretend play is good for a child's development...and for my entertainment.

cooking : pulled pork sandwich

This is probably one of the easiest meals I have ever made. It doesn't take any effort, and you come out looking better than Rachel Ray. It feeds over 10 people, with only 5 ingredients. And of course, its delicious.

Sounds too good to be true right?

Crock pot Pulled Pork Sandwich

1 - pork shoulder
1 - can/bottle of Dr. Pepper or Root beer
1 - dozen buns
8-10oz coleslaw
1 - bottle of your favorite BBQ sauce (we use Everett and Jones BBQ sauce)

1. Put the pork shoulder in the crock pot and pour the bottle of soda.
2. Set it on low for 7 hours.
3. Drain the juice, shred the meat, and mix in the bbq sauce.

That's it! We like to put the coleslaw on the bun...it gives it a nice crunchy texture. Blee LOVES it!

Like I said, it's super easy, and it's perfect for the summer. I usually put the meat in my crock pot in the morning and forget about it till dinner. For sides, you can add beans, corn or fruit.

Remember, the greatest gift is not found in a store nor under a tree, but in the hearts of true friends. -- Cindy Lew

I see a friendship growing and it makes my heart smile.

Truly excited to see their friendship grow.
