cardboard box city 2012

On July 28th and 29th, my church, First Christian Church of Torrance, is hosting a fundraiser for Family Promise, a "non-profit, interfaith hospitality network working toward providing transitional assistance for families with children experiencing homelessness.

Similar to a walk-a-thon, participants in Cardboard Box City raise a minimum of $25 in pledges and contributions, and then sleep overnight in a cardboard box "home" as a resident of Box City.

This is a great opportunity to dramatically educate our young people and our community about the difficulties of homelessness. All funds raised will go to Family Promise of the South Bay, a new interfaith coalition working to help families with children out of homelessness.

There will be fun activities, entertainment, and food for participants. Awards will be given to the largest group size, participants who raise the most money, and to the most creative cardboard dwelling.

Cardboard Box City is open to all: families, adults, and children, as well as scouting troops, church youth groups and other service organizations. (Children under the age of 10 need to be accompanied by an adult if staying overnight. For groups, the youth to adult ratio must be 5 to 1.)

I will be photographing the event and Jimmy will be staying the night as one of the residents of Box City. If you are interested, please sign up online at

If you have any questions, please feel free to email Jimmy at
Thanks, and I hope to see you there!
