photo tip : remote

Over a year ago, we took these photos at the South Coast Botanical Garden. I really wanted a nice family photo before Blee turned 1, but since it was wedding season, I couldn't find a photographer.

So, what did we do? Use a remote!

I think using a remote is far better than using a self-timer for many reasons. The biggest thing is that you don't have to keep resetting the timer, which can cause little ones to get restless. It's easy to set up, and you can take hundreds of photos within minutes. I was afraid that Blee wouldn't look at the camera without anyone to get his attention, but he heard the sound of the shutter and looked right at the camera.

Canon 5D Mark II 50mm, 1.4 (ISO 1250, f 2.0, 1/250)

Canon 5D Mark II 28-70mm 2.8IS (ISO 1000, f 2.8, 1/160)
The con? Unless you use Photoshop or you're totally creative, you'll see the remote in the shot. In the photos above, Jimmy and I both wore a black top, hoping that they blend in with the remote.

Many DSLRs have an option to get a remote. Believe me, it's worth it.

Blee's 2nd birthday is just over a month away! I'm hoping for another family photo session...with a remote.
